Dear Sir,

FAR EASTEN SZCTION

I recently comunicated to yo, on behalf of the members

of the Van Bastern section, a resolution urging the extension

of the Trading with the themy Act for at least five years 80

Mfar as Germans in China were concerned. Since the adoption

of that resolution we have received a pressing message from

the ritish Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai urging support for

their contention that fermans in China, and, if possible, in

Janson should be repatriated without dela.

1 as instructed to say that the Section are of opinion

that, in their view, this solution of the whole question is,

of course, preferable if it is in the power of .. Government

to persuude the Chinese Government to take such a step.

[]

4. to express te hope tant H. Government will

ap roach the Chinese and Japanese Governments respectively,

and urge that the course suggested above should be followed.

8 you will be aware, the business met ods by which

termans in China previous to the war were able to encroach to

a very appreciable extent on ritish Trade have always been

considered unsound and objectionable and, in effect, unfair

competition. The attitude of the Germans in China during the

ar is notorious and these reasons alone, I am to subinit,

justify the foregoing request.
